Abstract

Urban public spaces are pivotal to the welfare and prosperity of modern cities. Recognizing their importance, this research addresses the critical gap in understanding and enhancing the qualities of these spaces through advanced analytics, focusing on Tehrans main traditional market, the Bazaar. A novel methodological framework combining Social Network Analysis (SNA), and Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, supported by location-based social media reviews, was employed. This innovative approach assessed the Bazaars comfort, vitality, and safety, analyzing real-time public interactions and perceptions through social media data. The findings highlighted the Bazaars central role in Tehrans urban landscape and identified the need for strategic design interventions. These interventions aimed to improve walkability, comfort, safety, and diversity, and have been successfully implemented, significantly enhancing the Bazaars quality and usability. This study not only advances urban studies and planning by providing a model for urban public space analysis but also underscores the value of social media data in urban analytics. The successful revitalization of Tehrans Bazaar sets a precedent for enriching urban experiences and boosting city vitality through similar interventions in other urban spaces.

城市公共空间对现代城市的福祉与繁荣至关重要。通过认识到其重要性,本研究致力于通过先进的分析方法,填补在理解和提升此类空间品质方面的关键空白,研究重点聚焦于德黑兰的主要传统市场 —— 大巴扎。本研究采用了一种新颖的方法框架,将社交网络分析(SNA)与优势、劣势、机会和威胁(SWOT)分析相结合,并以基于区位的社交媒体评论作为支撑。这种创新方法通过社交媒体数据评估大巴扎的舒适度、活力和安全性,分析实时的公众互动与感知。研究结果凸显了大巴扎在德黑兰城市景观中的核心地位,并明确了进行战略性设计干预的必要性。这些干预旨在提升步行便利性、舒适度、安全性和多样性,且已成功实施,显著提升了大巴扎的品质与可用性。本研究不仅通过提供城市公共空间分析模型推动了城市研究与规划的发展,还强调了社交媒体数据在城市分析中的价值。德黑兰大巴扎的成功复兴,为通过在其他城市空间开展类似干预来丰富城市体验、提升城市活力树立了典范。

Dr Saeed Banihashemi is an Associate Professor at the School of Built Environment, University of Technology Sydney, where he spearheads teaching and research in digital construction. With a PhD in Built Environment and over a decade of experience spanning academia, research, and industry collaboration, Dr. Banihashemis work lies at the forefront of digital transformation, construction technology, and sustainability in the built environment.

Dr Banihashemi brings a unique interdisciplinary background, combining deep expertise in both architecture and construction. This fusion allows him to effectively bridge the design and execution phases of the built environment, ensuring that emerging technologies are seamlessly integrated across the lifecycle of construction projects. An expert in the adoption of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR), Dr Banihashemi actively applies these innovations in his teaching, research, and industry development projects. His work is driving transformative change in the design, construction, and infrastructure sectors, enhancing productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
